Al-Mutahhar ibn Sharaf al-Din

c. 1503–1572 · 16th century

Al-Mutahhar ibn Sharaf al-Din (c. 1503–1572) was a Zaydi leader in Yemen, son of Imam al-Mutawakkil Yahya Sharaf al-Din. Lame in one leg and therefore barred from the imamate, he nevertheless dominated the highlands and in 1567 led a great revolt that came close to driving out the Ottomans. After Sinan Pasha's reconquest of 1569–1570 he made peace with the Ottomans and kept a reduced domain until his death.
