Alexey Kaledin was a Russian cavalry general and the first elected ataman of the Don Cossacks after the February Revolution of 1917. A successful army commander in the First World War, he refused to recognise the Bolshevik seizure of power and gave refuge to the Volunteer Army on the Don.
