Alexios III Angelos

c. 1153–1211 · 12th century

Alexios III Angelos was Byzantine emperor from 1195, after blinding and deposing his brother Isaac II. His weak rule allowed provincial lords such as Leo Sgouros and Dobromir Chrysos to set up their own lordships. He fled Constantinople when the Fourth Crusade arrived in 1203, and his son-in-law Theodore Laskaris later founded the Empire of Nicaea.
