John IV Laskaris

1250–c. 1305 · 13th century

John IV Laskaris became emperor of Nicaea as a boy in 1258. His regent and co-emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos recovered Constantinople in 1261 and then had John blinded and confined, ending the Laskarid dynasty. The act caused the patriarch to excommunicate Michael and left lasting resentment in Anatolia.
