d. 1580 · 16th century

Ali Adil Shah I was the fifth Adil Shahi sultan of Bijapur, ruling from 1558 to 1580. He joined the alliance of Deccan sultanates that crushed the Vijayanagara Empire at the Battle of Talikota in 1565, but his long siege of Portuguese Goa in 1570–1571 failed. He completed the walls of Bijapur, began its great Jama Masjid, and was murdered in 1580.
