Anglo-Hanseatic War

1469–1474 · 15th century

The Anglo-Hanseatic War was a conflict between England and the Hanseatic League, fought mainly at sea by privateers, after Hanseatic merchants in London were arrested and fined in 1468. Danzig captains such as Paul Beneke raided English shipping, and Edward IV, needing peace, agreed to the Treaty of Utrecht in 1474. The treaty restored and confirmed the Hansa's privileges in England and gave it ownership of the London Steelyard.
