Aratus of Soli

c. 315–c. 240 BCE · 3rd century BCE

Aratus of Soli was a Greek poet from Cilicia who lived at the Macedonian court of Antigonus II Gonatas. His Phaenomena, a didactic poem describing the constellations and weather signs, became one of the most widely read works of ancient literature, translated into Latin by Cicero and Germanicus and quoted in the Acts of the Apostles. Hipparchus wrote a commentary criticising its astronomy.
