Arcadian Gate

c. 369 BCE · 4th century BCE

The Arcadian Gate is the monumental northern gateway of ancient Messene in the south-western Peloponnese, built when the city was founded under Theban protection in 369 BCE. A double gate with a circular inner courtyard, it carried the road towards Arcadia and Megalopolis and formed part of a circuit of stone walls and towers some 9 kilometres long. It is among the best-preserved examples of Greek military architecture of the 4th century BCE.
