Argive Heraion

Also known as Heraion of Argos

The Argive Heraion was the chief sanctuary of the goddess Hera in the Argolid in southern Greece, on a hillside between Argos and Mycenae. Controlled by Argos, it had temples from the 7th century BCE, and after a fire in 423 BCE a new temple was built with a gold and ivory statue of Hera by the sculptor Polykleitos. It is the setting of the story of Cleobis and Biton told by Herodotus.
