Argos
Argos is a city in the north-eastern Peloponnese of Greece, one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Europe. In the Archaic period it dominated the Argolid and was Sparta's chief rival in the Peloponnese, defeating it at Hysiae in the seventh century BCE but losing the Thyreatis around 546 BCE and much of its army at Sepeia in 494 BCE. Its sanctuary of Hera, the Heraion, was among the major cult centres of Greece.
