Aristagoras of Miletus

d. 497 BCE · 6th century BCE

Aristagoras was tyrant of Miletus, ruling in place of his father-in-law Histiaeus under Persian authority. After a failed expedition against Naxos he led the Ionian cities into the Ionian Revolt against Persia in 499 BCE and sought help from Sparta and Athens. He left for Thrace, where he was killed, and Persia sacked Miletus in 494 BCE.
