Büyük Menderes River
The Büyük Menderes, the ancient Maeander, is a river of south-western Turkey that flows west into the Aegean Sea near ancient Miletus. Its winding course gave the word 'meander' to English, and its valley was a major route from the coast into Anatolia. Cities such as Magnesia, Priene and Antioch on the Maeander stood along it.
