Aristides

c. 530–468 BCE · 5th century BCE · Also known as Aristides the Just

Aristides, called the Just, was an Athenian statesman and general. He fought at Marathon in 490 BCE, was ostracised in 482 after opposing Themistocles, and was recalled to command at Salamis and Plataea in 480–479. In 478–477 he assessed the contributions of ships or money owed by the members of the new Delian League, and his fairness gave him his lasting nickname.
