Artaxiad dynasty
The Artaxiad dynasty ruled the Kingdom of Armenia from about 189 BCE to the early 1st century CE. Its founder, Artaxias I, a former Seleucid governor, declared independence after Antiochus III's defeat at Magnesia and built a new capital at Artaxata. Under Tigranes the Great the dynasty briefly ruled an empire from the Caspian to the Mediterranean before Rome reduced Armenia to a client kingdom.
