Etchmiadzin Cathedral

4th century · 4th century · Also known as Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin

Etchmiadzin Cathedral, in the city of Vagharshapat in Armenia, is the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the seat of its Catholicos. Tradition says Gregory the Illuminator built it after a vision soon after Armenia adopted Christianity in the early 4th century, making it one of the oldest cathedrals in the world. The present building largely dates from a rebuilding in the late 5th century, with later additions.
