Arwa al-Sulayhi

1048–1138 · 12th century · Also known as Arwa bint Ahmad, Queen Arwa

Arwa al-Sulayhi was queen of the Sulayhid dynasty of Yemen, who governed for some fifty years, first for her ailing husband Ahmad al-Mukarram and then in her own right, until her death in 1138. She moved the capital to Dhu Jibla, built its great mosque and was given authority over the Fatimid Isma'ili mission in Yemen. In the Fatimid split of 1130 she backed al-Tayyib, founding the Tayyibi branch of Isma'ilism.
