Atar

Atar is a town in central Mauritania and the capital of the Adrar region. An oasis of date palms on caravan routes across the western Sahara, it became the main centre of the Emirate of Adrar. French forces under Henri Gouraud occupied it in 1909, and today it is the gateway for travel to the old towns of Chinguetti and Ouadane.
