AUKUS is a security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States announced in September 2021. Its main element provides for Australia to acquire nuclear-powered, conventionally armed submarines, first by purchase from the United States and then of a new shared design. It also covers cooperation in advanced military technologies and reflects concern over China's rise in the Indo-Pacific.
