Auld Alliance

1295–1560 · 13th century · Also known as Franco-Scottish alliance

The Auld Alliance was the alliance between Scotland and France against England, first sealed by a treaty of 1295 between John Balliol and Philip IV and renewed by most later Scottish kings. It drew Scotland into repeated wars with England, including the invasion that ended at Flodden in 1513, and brought French troops and influence into Scotland. It effectively ended with the Treaty of Edinburgh and the Scottish Reformation of 1560.
