Aulus Terentius Varro Murena

1st century BCE · 1st century BCE

Aulus Terentius Varro Murena was a Roman general in the early reign of Augustus. In 25 BCE he conquered the Salassi of the Aosta valley, selling about 36,000 of them into slavery, and founded the colony of Augusta Praetoria, modern Aosta, on their land. He is sometimes identified with the Murena executed for conspiring against Augustus around 22 BCE, but this is disputed.
