Avalon Peninsula
The Avalon Peninsula is a large peninsula in south-eastern Newfoundland, Canada, joined to the rest of the island by a narrow isthmus. It contains St John's, the provincial capital, and was the earliest area of European fishing and settlement in Newfoundland, including Lord Baltimore's colony of Avalon at Ferryland from 1621 and the French base of Plaisance, now Placentia.
