Awole

d. c. 1796 · 18th century · Also known as Alaafin Awole

Awole was an Alaafin of the Oyo Empire in the late eighteenth century. His reign was marked by conflict with leading chiefs, including Afonja, the Are-Ona-Kakanfo at Ilorin. Rejected by his chiefs around 1796, he was obliged by custom to take his own life, and his fall began a period of rebellion that hastened Oyo's collapse.
