Afonja
Afonja was the Are-Ona-Kakanfo, the leading military commander of the Oyo Empire, based at Ilorin. Around c. 1817 he rebelled against the Alaafin and enlisted Fulani and Hausa Muslim support. His rebellion was a decisive blow to Oyo, and Ilorin was soon absorbed into the sphere of the Sokoto Caliphate after Afonja himself was overthrown by his allies.
