Ayas (Cilicia)
Ayas, the Laiazzo of Italian merchants, is a port on the Gulf of İskenderun in southern Turkey, now the town of Yumurtalık. In the 13th and 14th centuries it was the chief harbour of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, where Venetian and Genoese traders bought silk and spices brought overland from Asia; Marco Polo set out from it in 1271. It fell to the Mamluks in the 14th century.
