Bairu
The Bairu are the farming people of the Kingdom of Ankole in south-western Uganda and of neighbouring kingdoms such as Karagwe. They formed the majority of the population but held lower status than the cattle-owning Bahima, from whom the kings and leading chiefs came, and owed them tribute in produce and labour. Resentment of this inequality fed Bairu political movements in the late colonial and early independence periods.
