Baixa de Kasanje
The Baixa de Kasanje, or Baixa de Cassanje, is a broad fertile lowland in the valley of the Kwango River in northern Angola. Around 1620 an Imbangala band settled there and founded the Kingdom of Kasanje, which dominated the slave trade between the interior and Portuguese Luanda. In January 1961 a revolt of cotton growers in the region, brutally suppressed, was one of the opening events of the Angolan War of Independence.
