Bakel

Bakel is a town on the Senegal River in eastern Senegal, near the borders with Mali and Mauritania. The French built a fort there around 1820 as a trading post in the Soninke kingdom of Gajaaga, and it later served as a base for French expansion along the upper Senegal.
