Battle of Copenhagen (1801)

1801 · 19th century · Part of the French Revolutionary Wars

The Battle of Copenhagen was fought on 2 April 1801 when a British fleet under Sir Hyde Parker, with Horatio Nelson leading the attack, engaged the Danish-Norwegian fleet moored before Copenhagen. Britain struck because Denmark had joined the League of Armed Neutrality. After hard fighting a truce was agreed, and Denmark left the league. Nelson is said to have ignored a signal to withdraw.
