Battle of Covadonga

c. 722 · 8th century

The Battle of Covadonga was fought in the mountains of Asturias, traditionally in 718 but more probably in 722, between a Muslim force and Asturian rebels led by the Visigothic noble Pelagius. Pelagius's victory, magnified in later chronicles, secured the independence of a small Christian realm that became the Kingdom of Asturias, and Spanish tradition came to treat it as the start of the Reconquista.
