Alfonso II of Asturias

c. 759–842 · 9th century · Also known as Alfonso the Chaste

Alfonso II, called the Chaste, was King of Asturias from 791 to 842. He made Oviedo his capital, modelled his court and church on the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo, resisted repeated Umayyad raids and kept contact with Charlemagne. During his reign the supposed tomb of Saint James was discovered at Compostela, and he built the first church there, beginning a great pilgrimage.
