Battle of Qarqar

853 BCE · 9th century BCE

The Battle of Qarqar was fought in 853 BCE near the Orontes river in Syria between the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III and a coalition of twelve kings led by Hadadezer of Damascus, Irhuleni of Hamath and Ahab of Israel. Shalmaneser claimed victory on the Kurkh Monolith, but his advance into Syria was halted for years. The inscription is the earliest non-biblical reference to a king of Israel.
