Battle of Pydna

168 BCE · 2nd century BCE · Part of the Third Macedonian War

The Battle of Pydna was fought on 22 June 168 BCE near Pydna in Macedonia, where a Roman army under Lucius Aemilius Paullus defeated King Perseus of Macedon. Broken up on rough ground, the Macedonian phalanx was cut to pieces by the more flexible Roman legions. The battle ended the Third Macedonian War and the Antigonid monarchy, and Rome divided Macedonia into four republics.
