Battle of Roncevaux Pass
The Battle of Roncevaux Pass was fought in 778 in the Pyrenees, where Charlemagne's rearguard was ambushed and destroyed by Basques during the withdrawal from a failed Spanish campaign. The event demonstrated the geographic limits of the Carolingian military machine. It was later celebrated in legend, notably in the medieval Song of Roland, and is part of the Carolingian Empire's military history.
