Basques
The Basques are a people of the western Pyrenees, in northern Spain and south-western France, with a distinct language unrelated to other European languages. In 778 Basque forces ambushed the rearguard of Charlemagne's army at Roncevaux Pass. The episode, later celebrated in the Song of Roland, was a notable setback for the Carolingian Empire.
