Duchy of Gascony

602 CE – 1053 CE (approx.) · capital Bordeaux

Duchy between the Garonne and the Pyrenees, set up by the Franks to contain the Basques, which became the core of Gascon identity.

Origins

Around 602 the Frankish kings created a Duchy of Vasconia under a duke named Genial to control the Basques, who had pushed north of the Pyrenees into the old Roman Novempopulana. The region soon slipped from Frankish control and was often allied with the dukes of the Early Duchy of Aquitaine.

Rule and society

The Basques were notoriously hard to govern: in 778 they ambushed Charlemagne's rearguard at Roncevaux. From the late 9th century a native dynasty, traditionally descended from the semi-legendary Sancho Mitarra, ruled largely independently. Duke William Sánchez defeated Viking raiders and founded the abbey of Saint-Sever, and Bordeaux became the ducal seat.

Decline and legacy

The male line ended with Sancho VI William in 1032. After a succession struggle, Guy-Geoffrey, count of Poitou, secured Gascony in the 1050s and united it with the Duchy of Aquitaine. Gascony passed with Aquitaine to the English kings and kept its own Occitan dialect.
