1583 · 16th century

The Battle of Shizugatake was fought in 1583 near Lake Biwa in Omi province, Japan, between Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie, rival successors to Oda Nobunaga. Hideyoshi made a rapid forced march to the battlefield and defeated Katsuie's commander Sakuma Morimasa; Katsuie retreated to his castle of Kitanosho, where he killed himself.
