Battle of Sievershausen

1553 · 16th century · Part of the Second Margrave War

The Battle of Sievershausen was fought on 9 July 1553 near Lehrte in Lower Saxony between Elector Maurice of Saxony and Margrave Albert Alcibiades of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, whose plundering campaigns threatened the peace of the Empire. Maurice won, but he was mortally wounded and died two days later. It was one of the bloodiest battles fought in sixteenth-century Germany.
