Battle of Siffin

657 CE · 7th century · Part of the First Fitna

The Battle of Siffin was fought in 657 CE on the Euphrates in Syria between the caliph Ali and Mu'awiya, the governor of Syria, during the First Fitna. The fighting ended inconclusively in arbitration, which divided Ali's supporters and led to the secession of the Kharijites. The battle deepened the civil war that brought the Rashidun Caliphate to an end.
