Ibn Muljam

d. 661 · 7th century · Also known as Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam

Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam was a Kharijite who assassinated the fourth caliph, Ali ibn Abi Talib, in the mosque of Kufa in January 661, striking him with a poisoned sword during the dawn prayer. The Kharijites had broken with Ali after he accepted arbitration with Muawiya at Siffin. Ibn Muljam was executed after Ali's death, which ended the Rashidun Caliphate.
