Battle of the Camel

656 CE · 7th century · Part of the First Fitna

The Battle of the Camel was fought in 656 CE near Basra between the caliph Ali and forces led by Aisha, Talha and al-Zubayr, who demanded vengeance for the murdered caliph Uthman. It takes its name from the camel on which Aisha rode during the fighting. Ali won, but it was the first battle between Muslims in the First Fitna, the civil war that undermined the Rashidun Caliphate.
