Battle of Sripurambiyam

c. 885 · 9th century · Also known as Battle of Tiruppurambiyam

The Battle of Sripurambiyam was fought around 885 near Kumbakonam in the Kaveri delta, when the Pallava king Aparajita and his ally Prithvipati I of the Western Gangas, with Chola support, defeated the Pandya king Varaguna II. Prithvipati was killed in the battle. The victory checked Pandya expansion but weakened the Pallavas too, opening the way for the rise of the Cholas under Aditya I.
