Battle of Sphacteria

425 BCE · 5th century BCE · Also known as Sphacteria · Part of the Peloponnesian War

The Battle of Sphacteria was fought in 425 BCE on the island of Sphacteria, which closes the bay of Pylos in Messenia, during the Peloponnesian War. After Athenian forces fortified Pylos, a Spartan force was cut off on the island; Athenian troops under Cleon and Demosthenes overwhelmed it, and 292 men, about 120 of them Spartiates, surrendered. Their capture shocked Greece and pushed Sparta towards the Peace of Nicias.
