Battle of the Jaxartes

329 BCE · 4th century BCE · Part of the Wars of Alexander the Great

The Battle of the Jaxartes was fought in 329 BCE on the Syr Darya, near the newly founded Alexandria Eschate, between Alexander the Great and Saka nomads from beyond the river. Using catapults to cover the crossing and combining cavalry with light troops to pin the mounted archers, Alexander won a clear victory. He then made peace with the Saka rather than pursue them into the steppe.
