Wars of Alexander the Great

336–323 BCE · 4th century BCE · Also known as Conquests of Alexander the Great

The Wars of Alexander the Great were the campaigns fought by Alexander III of Macedon between 336 and 323 BCE, first to secure Greece and then against the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Victories at the Granicus, Issus and Gaugamela gave him Anatolia, Egypt, Mesopotamia and Iran, and he pressed on through Central Asia to the Indus valley. His conquests spread Greek rule and culture across the Near East and opened the Hellenistic age.
