Battle of Zarumilla

1941 · 20th century · Part of the Ecuadorian–Peruvian War

The Battle of Zarumilla was fought in July 1941 near the Zarumilla River on the border between Ecuador and Peru. A larger, better-equipped Peruvian army, using aircraft and paratroops, defeated the Ecuadorian forces and occupied the province of El Oro. The defeat forced Ecuador to accept the Rio de Janeiro Protocol of 1942, which gave most of the disputed Amazon territory to Peru.
