Liberal Revolution of 1895
The Liberal Revolution of 1895 in Ecuador began with a rising in Guayaquil on 5 June 1895 that proclaimed Eloy Alfaro supreme chief. Liberal forces then fought their way into the Sierra and took Quito, ending the conservative order. The liberal governments that followed separated church and state, secularised education and marriage, and completed the Guayaquil–Quito railway.
