Beatus of Liébana

c. 730–c. 800 · 8th century

Beatus of Liébana was a monk of the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana in Cantabria. Around 776 he wrote a Commentary on the Apocalypse, and with Bishop Etherius of Osma he attacked the Adoptionist teaching of Elipandus of Toledo. Copies of his commentary, illustrated in the Mozarabic style and known as Beatus manuscripts, are among the greatest works of medieval Spanish book painting.
