Benjamin of Tudela

d. 1173 · 12th century

Benjamin of Tudela was a Jewish traveller from Tudela in Navarre who journeyed from Spain through southern France, Italy, Greece and Constantinople to the Levant, Mesopotamia and Baghdad, probably between about 1165 and 1173. His Book of Travels, written in Hebrew, describes the Jewish communities he found and gives valuable information on the cities, trade and rulers of the twelfth-century Mediterranean and Middle East.
