Bloemfontein Convention

1854 · 19th century

The Bloemfontein Convention was the agreement of 23 February 1854 by which Britain withdrew from the Orange River Sovereignty and recognised the independence of its Boer inhabitants. Signed by the special commissioner Sir George Clerk and representatives of the burghers, it led to the creation of the Orange Free State. It followed the Sand River Convention of 1852, which had recognised the Transvaal.
