Bobo-Dioulasso
Bobo-Dioulasso is the second-largest city of Burkina Faso, in the south-west of the country. It grew from the village of Sya, a market of Dyula Muslim traders, which in the 19th century became the main centre of the Kingdom of Gwiriko. The French occupied it in 1897, and the railway from Abidjan, which reached it in 1934, made it a commercial hub; its mud-built Grand Mosque is a landmark.
